Naseeruddin Shah shared that he feared the 1999 Kandahar Hijack of Flight IC 814 would lead to another wave of Islamophobia. At a press conference where the veteran actor was joined by the cast and crew of the recently released IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, he reflected on the incident’s impact.
Recalling his reaction to the incident that took place in 1999, he shared, “I was about 50 when this happened, the end of the century. I remember being extremely disturbed because I feared it would provoke another wave of Islamophobia. Luckily at that time, it did not.”
He further added, “I remember feeling terribly concerned about the situation and what it would lead to. There was a feeling of ambivalence when the crisis was resolved. I was left with a feeling of unease when the deal was struck. I couldn’t pinpoint why I felt like that but I the pilot and the passengers had been through a horrifying time and this was no closure. That’s how I remember feeling.”
Anubhav Sinha’s IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack which also features Vijay Varma, Dia Mirza, Pankaj Kapur, Kumud Mishra and more is currently streaming.
