In recent months, Ariana Grande has been subjected to increasing scrutiny over her voice, with fans accusing her of putting on a fake accent in real life since landing the role of Glinda in her upcoming movie, Wicked.
Here, she said that changing voices is “a normal thing that people do” as she once again reiterated that she spent a long time speaking in character as Glinda during filming for the movie.
Still, the scrutiny has continued, with Ariana’s voice arguably being one of the biggest talking points from her and Cynthia Erivo’s joint appearance on Vanity Fair’s infamous Lie Detector Test YouTube series, which went live on Monday.
“There is a part of the world that isn’t familiar with what it takes to transform your voice, whether it’s singing or taking on a different dialect for a role or doing a character voice for something,” she told Vanity Fair.
And despite the scrutiny, Ariana has said that she is proud of the voice that she was able to create for Glinda.
Wicked will be released in theaters across the US and UK on Nov. 22.
